    BACKGROUND

    At the Fourth ASEAN Summit, the ASEAN leaders agreed that ASEAN should help accelerate the development of local identity and solidarity with considering ways to further strengthen the existing network of leading universities and institutions of higher education in the region. It was later developed into the ASEAN University Network (AUN) which was established in November 1995 with the signing of the charter by the Minister responsible for Higher Education from ASEAN member countries, the signing of the Agreement Establishing the AUN president / provost / vice chancellor of the university who participated and formation AUN Board of Trustees.

    PURPOSE

    The main objective of the AUN is to strengthen the cooperation network among the leading universities in the existing ASEAN, by promoting cooperation and solidarity among ASEAN scholars and academics, human resource development and academic professionals, and promoting the dissemination of information among ASEAN academicians. Indeed, the network has galvanized quests individual ASEAN countries for academic collaboration in priority areas defined collectively that will deepen the understanding of the dynamics of ASEAN, and thus accelerate the development of regional identity and solidarity.

    STRUCTURE AUN

    The AUN structure consists of three interrelated components: Board of Trustees, the university participants in the ASEAN member countries, and the AUN Secretariat .

    1 . Policy level: Board of Trustees

    AUN Board of Trustees is composed of one representative from each of the ASEAN member countries. Secretary General of ASEAN, the chairman of the meeting senior education officials, Director of SEAMEO Secretariat, AUN Executive Director as ex-officio members, and the secretary general of the Office of Higher Education Commission, Ministry of Education, Thailand as an ex-officio member, and chairman of the board of supervisors.

    2 . Implementing Level: University Participants

    University participants will carry out programs and activities of AUN. In July 2010, the AUN has 26 university members of the 10 ASEAN member countries.

    3 . Coordination and monitoring body : AUN Secretariat

    AUN Secretariat function is to plan, organize, coordinate, monitor and evaluate the programs and activities of AUN, to propose and develop new ideas and innovation as a mechanism to source and generate funds for the independent operation of the AUN, and to conduct periodic assessment and review what AUN has been achieved. Thailand hosted the AUN Secretariat Office, located at Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand .

    AUN ACTIVITIES

    The AUN currently done more than 20 projects in collaboration with ASEAN and its dialogue partners such as China, the European Union, Japan, and Korea. Our activities are grouped based on stakeholder involvement include:

    Youth

    1. AUN student exchange program: AUN seeks to increase academic mobility between universities and other members through exchange schemes and scholarships.
    2. Education Forum and youth speech contest AUN: The main feature of this annual event is a two week work camp consisting of both academic programs and non-academic for students to engage in activities in the ASEAN context.
    3. ASEAN Youth Cultural Forum: This forum is dedicated annual event for young people who are talented in dance, music and song. This activity aims to bring together the culture and traditions of participants in the share of ASEAN countries. In addition, this forum is designed to present a unique opportunity for ASEAN to reflect the values ​​of our deepest cultural and traditions.
    4. ASEAN Studies Program: This program is designed as an interdisciplinary study of development of ASEAN and regional governance systems in the global order is changing rapidly. Currently, the core program syllabus for Masters in ASEAN Studies has been developed in which the University of Malaya to host the International Masters in ASEAN Studies Course in collaboration with the University of AUN Member.

    Faculty members

    1. AUN Distinguished Scholars Program: The goal is to improve mobility and strengthen the network of ASEAN scholars to provide an opportunity for faculty members to visit AUN Member Universities other in order to exchange knowledge, expertise, and experience.
    2. AUN Collaborative Research: The objective of this program is to encourage the exchange inter-ASEAN scholars expert by sharing effort, expertise and technology through research cooperation in responding to local needs.

    Executive

    • Meeting of the AUN Board of Trustees ( AUN – BOT )

    AUN-BOT Meeting, the policy level, the general nature composed of a two-day extensive discussion and review of the activities of AUN, approving and supporting policies and strategic plans AUN Secretariat. Board members meet regularly once a year.

    • Conference AUN Rectors

    A platform for high level of AUN Member Universities ( President / Rector / Vice Chancellor ) to learn and share their views with the resource persons in the ASEAN region to the challenges ahead and the issues of concern of ASEAN.

    • Meeting AUN Rectors ‘

    The meeting was held behind closed doors for 26 representatives of AUN Member Universities alone, and focus on internal policy issues.

    Now, the 26 AUN universities throughout ASEAN.

    ASEAN University Network (AUN) is a form of cooperation of ASEAN member universities who have a similar vision and mission that is trying to improve the quality of learning of higher education in each member state.

    Now, AUN consists of 26 universities throughout ASEAN.
